In the heart of Samsi Municipality, Mahottari, a transformative one-day Disability Assessment Camp was held on 22nd May 2025, organized in collaboration with IRDS by Prerana Rehabilitation centre, sarlahi and dedicated rehabilitation professionals. The camp aimed to provide critical support to persons with disabilities, offering assistive devices, physiotherapy follow-ups, and home-based exercise training.
Breaking Barriers: From Superstition to Support
In many rural communities like Samsi, disabilities are often misunderstood. Misguided beliefs label them as “curses from God,” leaving individuals isolated and deprived of care. Illiteracy and deep-rooted superstitions further hinder access to medical help. This camp served as a beacon of awareness, educating families that disabilities are medical conditions, not divine punishments, and that rehabilitation can restore dignity and mobility.
Key Highlights of the Camp
- Physiotherapy sessions were conducted, with experts teaching home-based exercises to ensure continuous care.
- 12 assistive devices were distributed to 8 beneficiaries, including wheelchairs, CP chairs, and standing frames, tailored to individual needs.
- Toilet chairs and rollators were provided to improve daily living for those with mobility challenges.
Stories of Transformation
One beneficiary, an elderly woman who had spent years confined to her home due to a hemiplegia, received a wheelchair. With tears in her eyes, she said, “I thought God had forgotten me. Today, I feel hope.” Another young child with cerebral palsy was fitted with a CP chair, enabling them to sit upright for the first time—a small victory with life-changing impact.
Challenges and the Way Forward
While the camp was a success, challenges remain:
- Deep-seated superstitions require sustained community awareness programs.
- Follow-up care is essential to ensure long-term benefits.
Join the Movement
This camp proved that compassion and science can overcome stigma. Let’s continue supporting initiatives that turn despair into dignity. Disability is not a curse—it’s a call for solidarity.
**Every device delivered is a step toward independence—and every myth dispelled is a step toward inclusion.**
