DISABILITY CAMP IN SIRAHA

It was a truly inspiring day on June 26, 2025, in Dhangadhimai Municipality, Siraha, when a dedicated program for persons with physical disabilities transformed perspectives—and lives. The full-day camp brought together disabled clients, highly trained therapists, and compassionate local leaders to restore autonomy and dignity, all with the shared conviction that this is not just about distributing devices—but delivering a service of empowerment.

A New Kind of Disability Camp

Focused on people, not products.
Deputy Mayor of Dhangadhimai, a vigorous advocate for inclusive care—was front and center, highlighting what makes this initiative special: it’s not a matter of “giving away” wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches. Instead, it is a prescribed, patient-centered service, rooted in professional assessment and therapeutic evaluation. Only after a comprehensive examination by physiotherapists and prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) specialists did equipment get provided—tailored precisely to individual needs.

Professional Assessment: The Heart of the Program

You asked: Where was the Mayor? He was there—though it was the act of scientifically guiding each patient to the correct assistive device that truly took the spotlight.

Physiotherapists and P&O specialists conducted thorough assessments. They examined range of motion, muscle strength, posture, balance, skin condition, and daily functional needs. No two evaluations were the same, because no two people are. The final prescription was always fine-tuned and personalized. It was very pleasure to work with Dhangadimai municipality staff.

“Service, Not Just Stuff”

This camp wasn’t about handing out products. It was about delivering a trusted service that empowers individuals. Consider:

  • Professional validation: Each device was prescribed only once assessment confirmed it would benefit the user. This prevented duplication, misuse, and ill-fitting provision.
  • Responsibility & dignity: Clients felt seen and understood. They were partners in their rehabilitation—after all, opting for a walker, wheelchair, or crutch is a life-changing choice!
  • Sustainable impact: Future follow-ups, therapy, and maintenance were built into the program to ensure independence beyond the day of distribution.

51 Lives Enhanced, Not Changed

Over the course of the day, 51 individuals received tailored assessments and measurements. Each patient underwent:

  1. Physiotherapy evaluation
  2. P&O assessment
  3. Personalized measurement for the correct assistive device

When measurements were confirmed, the precise device—be it a wheelchair for Mr. X, a pair of customized orthotics for Ms. Y, or a mobility aid for Mr. Z—was prepared for future delivery and use.

A Beacon of Inclusive Leadership

Deputy Mayor put it best:

“This is more than providing correct assistive device—it’s about building capacity, consistent care, and enabling every person with a disability to participate fully in society.”

Mayoral and municipal support helped cover operational costs, secure the professional team, and ensure a smooth, dignified experience for every attendee.

What Comes Next?

This isn’t the end—it’s a milestone:

  • Device delivery & training: Each recipient will be guided on proper use, safety, and self-care strategies.
  • Follow-up visits: Physiotherapists and P&O experts will monitor adjustment, fit, and function—and make modifications as needed.
  • Community integration: Recipients are invited to share their experiences, build self-confidence, and foster peer support.

In Summary

The Dhangadhimai disability camp stands as a model of “service-first” rehabilitation, proving that real impact comes when expert professionals work with real people—not just products. With 51 lives positively impacted already, the program embodies what inclusive, compassionate leadership can achieve.

Here’s to more municipalities in Nepal—and beyond—adopting this holistic, empowering, and professional approach.

Looking Ahead: Hoping for a Fitment Camp Soon

While assessments are a crucial first step, the journey doesn’t end there. We are hopeful for a fitment camp in the near future, where all the measured and prescribed assistive devices will be fitted and fine-tuned to match each individual’s body, lifestyle, and mobility needs.

This will ensure not only the comfort and safety of the users but also maximize the functionality and long-term success of the intervention. It’s a continuation of the same philosophy: quality, dignity, and personalized service.

Together—with continued support from local authorities, professionals, and the community—we can make that next step a reality.

Stay tuned!
