Restoring Dignity, One Device at a Time: Nijgadh Assessment Camp for Persons with Disabilities

On a meaningful day in Nijgadh, the town echoed with more than just its usual rhythm, it resonated with hope, care, and compassion. In an inspiring collaboration between local partners and rehabilitation professionals, an Assessment Camp for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) was organized with the objective of identifying mobility and functional needs and recommending appropriate support. I felt very pleased with worked with Nijgadh municipality worker.

A total of 31 individuals with disabilities from surrounding communities participated in the camp, each bringing unique stories of resilience and silent strength. The assessment team, comprised of experienced physiotherapists, orthotists, and rehabilitation experts, conducted thorough evaluations to understand the specific needs of every participant.

What unfolded was both heartening and eye-opening. Among the 31 assessed, 19 individuals were found in immediate need of assistive devices to enhance their independence, mobility, and quality of life. Based on the assessments, the recommended assistive aids included:

  • Wheelchairs for those with limited or no mobility,
  • Tricycles for outdoor movement and community access,
  • Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFOs) for children with neurological conditions,
  • Toilet chairs for those facing challenges in basic hygiene management,
  • Below Knee (BK) Prostheses for amputees requiring artificial limb support,
  • And walkers to aid balance and prevent falls.

Each of these devices isn’t just a piece of equipment—it represents a doorway to inclusion, to schooling, to employment, and to a dignified life.

The camp was not only an assessment effort, but also a celebration of human rights and empathy. Parents, caregivers, and local leaders joined in, reinforcing the shared commitment to disability inclusion and equal opportunity.

This initiative in Nijgadh is a reminder that disability does not mean inability—with the right support and tools, everyone deserves the chance to live fully and participate equally in society. The next step is to mobilize resources and partners to ensure that the 19 identified individuals receive their prescribed assistive devices as soon as possible.

As we reflect on the success of this camp, we are motivated to extend such outreach to more communities, lighting the way forward for many more lives that await a helping hand.

Together, we can build a society where no one is left behind.
